Why “Just Boosting a Post” Isn’t a Facebook Strategy

Facebook Boost function

Boosting a Facebook post is quick. It’s right there. A blue button under your post. You click it, choose a budget and Facebook promises to show your post to more people.

Sounds like an easy but if you’re relying on it to grow your business, it’s not going to deliver much more than surface level visibility.

What Actually Happens When You Boost

When you boost a post, Facebook uses its algorithm to decide who might be interested, based mostly on your existing audience and what it thinks is a “good fit”.

But that’s Facebook choosing for you. Not you choosing your audience.

You don’t get much control over who sees the ad, where it shows or what action you actually want people to take. You’re often paying for likes or views, not clicks, enquiries or conversions.

In other words, boosting helps Facebook make money but not necessarily you.

What You Should Be Doing Instead

If you want better results, you need to run ads through Facebook Ads Manager. That’s where you can:-

  • Set clear goals (like website visits, purchases or leads)
  • Choose detailed targeting – by age, location, interests, behaviour etc
  • Control placements (Instagram, Messenger, Stories etc)
  • Monitor performance with proper tracking

This gives you control, allowing you to run campaigns that are focused, strategic and aligned with your business goals

When Boosting Might Be Okay

If a post is already getting organic engagement and you just want to increase reach, a small boost can help.

But it’s not a replacement for a proper ad strategy.

Before You Boost Again

Boosting a post is fine for quick visibility. But if you’re serious about reaching the right people and turning views into actual business it’s worth setting up your ads properly.
